Although we are not Carver Academy ® trained consultants, Unity Church Unitarian has been using the Policy Governance ® system longer than any Unitarian Universalist congregation in the country. With some slight adaptations, we’ve found it to be an excellent tool to empower and liberate the leadership of congregations and religious organizations to awaken compassion, transform lives and bless the world. Step 1:

Articulate Congregational Values and Mission
No matter what governance system you use, congregations and organizations that make a difference in the world articulate the core values and mission that guide all their decisions and actions. Unity Consulting offers workshops and training to help you use Appreciative-Inquiry to gather the input you need, and then to use that data to articulate your core values and mission.

Step 1:
Craft Your Policies

If you want to base your governance system on Policy Governance ®, Unity Consulting offers workshops and consulting to help your Board write inspiring ends (we recommend you start with ends), effective executive limitations, covenantal board governance style policies, and helpful board/executive relationship policies.

Unity Consulting offers consulting services to help you manage the challenges of your first year in Policy Governance ®, to help you quickly get used to the model and use it effectively. In particular, we can help your:

  • Executive write policy interpretations
  • Executive establish a strategic plan
  • Board design a trustee recruitment and training process

As you live more fully into Policy Governance ®, Unity Consulting offers webinars and consulting services to help you develop an even deeper experience. In particular, we can help you:

  • Refine monitoring and linkage practices

  • Guide the governance practice through Board trustee transition

  • Initiate holy conversation to renew/revise your values, mission and ends

Step 2:
Choose Your Governance System

Once you’ve articulated your congregation’s values and mission, you want to select a governance system that will help you fully act out of your values and achieve your mission. Unity Consulting offers Congregational Governance 101 to help you decide what elements you want to incorporate into your governance system.

Establish Organizational and Governance Support Structures

Unity Consulting offers consulting and workshops to help your Board:

  • Establish an organization structure that supports your congregation’s ends

  • Write new job descriptions

  • Develop a format and approach for monitoring reports

  • Test and enhance their linkage practices

    

Step 3:

Craft a Governance Transition Plan

Once you’ve articulated your core values and mission, and you’ve selected a governance system best aligned with your values and mission, you need a transition plan. Unity Consulting offers workshops and consulting services to help your Board craft that plan.
